Some basic concepts related to road traffic counting are explored, described and defined in this paper, including the ways of traffic counting and traffic counting devices. The traffic on the Croatian roads was analyzed in the period from 2013 to 2017 with some visible oscillations in the average annual daily traffic and average summer daily traffic as well as those in the density of the classified road network. Furthermore, the traffic on the state road number 8 was also analyzed and the counting points on that road were graphically shown in the period from 2013 to 2017. Since the construction of the traffic infrastructure is one of the most important factors in the development of some country, it is of crucial importance to carry out traffic counts on the roads. Due to the geographical position of the Republic of Croatia, it is necessary to provide a well-developed traffic infrastructure. The roads in Croatia are classified as state roads, country roads and local roads. One of the most important and most attractive state roads in Croatia is the state road number 8, which is known as the Adriatic Highway. Recently, it has often been referred to as the Adriatic tourist road. It is 643 km long and it passes through six Croatian counties, linking larger Croatian coastal towns. The construction of the Adriatic Highway lasted from 1945 to 1965 and it has become one of the greatest achievements of Croatian road constructions. The lifestyle of the coastal area has completely changed since the opening of the Adriatic Highway, areas that used to be poor have become places with a high-quality way of life. As the Adriatic Highway is in many aspects the only means of traffic communication in coastal areas, it has not lost its significance after the building of the A1 motorway.
