In order for city streets to meet the needs and demands of all who use them, intersections – both large and small – must function as safely and efficiently as possible. Good intersection design, however, goes beyond street safety. Well-designed intersections use street space to bring people together and refresh the city, while making traffic more intuitive, seamless and predictable for passers-by. Intersection design should allow visibility and predictability for all users, creating an environment where complex movements feel safe, easy and intuitive. Their design should promote eye contact between all street users, creating a streetscape where pedestrians, drivers and cyclists are aware of each other and can share space effectively. Intersections are the most challenging aspect of street design in an urban environment. Capacity constraints at these capture points in the road network determine the width of the pavements as they pass through them. Pedestrians may avoid difficult crossings or expose themselves or their children to significant risks while crossing the street at a poorly designed intersection.
